Today marks one year since I officially fell ill for the third time in 15 years. How am I doing now? Surprisingly well—better than I ever imagined. While I’m not fully recovered, I’m incredibly grateful for how far I’ve come. This time, I’ve been able to pinpoint the root causes of my health struggles, giving me the clarity to work toward true recovery.
Having experienced two burnouts before, I now consider myself a bit of a “burnout professional.” I already knew the general steps to take, but this past year taught me even more. With these insights, I’ve gathered some simple yet effective tips to help you on your journey to recovery.
Don’t Feel Guilty—Show Compassion Toward Yourself
When fatigue crashes over you, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed with emotions, questions, and even guilt. You might feel you’ve let down your family or work, or even blame yourself for your condition. Trust me—I’ve been there.
During my last burnout, I promised myself it would never happen again. Little did I know Epstein-Barr had been wreaking havoc in my body all along. Or that EMF sensitivity was draining me. There are always multiple factors that lead to these situations, and guilt won’t solve any of them.
Instead, practice self-compassion. Be kind to yourself. Let go of the blame and allow love for yourself to activate your body’s natural healing powers. If you’d like to explore self-compassion further, I highly recommend Kristin Neff’s book on the topic—it’s an insightful and easy read!
Accept That You’re in This Situation
Once you embrace self-compassion, acceptance becomes easier. Accepting your situation doesn’t mean giving up—it means releasing resistance. Resistance creates stress, which emits the wrong frequency for healing. By accepting where you are, you’ll align your mind and body with recovery.
Start With What You Can Control: Food and Movement
At the beginning of your journey, you won’t have control over your symptoms yet. Instead, focus on what you can manage: your diet and movement.
- Food: Look at your daily meals. Are you eating highly processed foods? Are you getting enough fruits and vegetables? How’s your sugar intake? Consider eating just three meals a day to give your immune system a break and support healing.
- Movement: While exercise is often recommended for burnout recovery, it can drain you further if you have a viral burnout. Supervised exercise is best in such cases. However, I recommend walking as much as you can. Short walks throughout the day are free, low-impact, and highly beneficial. Check out this article where I delve deeper into the benefits of walking.
Create a Structure for Eating and Sleeping
Establishing a daily routine is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to support recovery. Try to wake up and go to bed at the same times each day. Eat at regular intervals, too. Your body thrives on consistency, and structure gives it the stability it needs to focus on healing.
Make a Budget Plan to Reduce Financial Stress
Recovery can come with unexpected expenses, from lost income to treatment costs. Financial strain only adds to emotional stress, so it’s essential to create a budget plan.
Start by listing your expenses to get a clear picture of your financial situation. Can you cut back on non-essentials? Sell unused items? Borrow money if needed? Whatever steps you take, managing your finances proactively will ease anxiety and free up energy for healing.
Final Thoughts
I hope these tips resonate with you. They go beyond standard advice like “go on holiday” or “have some fun.” While those are nice distractions, true recovery requires deeper action and self-care.
