Looking for a healthy banana bread recipe that’s nostalgic, nourishing and a little indulgent? You’re in the right place. This is my twist on the classic American banana bread—one of my all-time favorite treats from the USA (psst, you can check out more of my American faves right here).
But let’s get back to this dreamy loaf.
It’s moist. It’s naturally sweet. And it has the perfect mix of textures: almond flour for that soft crumb, juicy blueberries, chewy dates, and yes—melty chocolate chips, because life’s too short for dry banana bread.
I love baking this on a slow Sunday, when the house is quiet and the oven does its cozy magic. The scent of banana, cinnamon, and vanilla fills the air, and before you know it, the whole loaf magically disappears. Every. Single. Time.
So whether you’re craving a gluten-free banana bread that still feels decadent, or you just want an excuse to use up those spotty bananas—this one’s for you.
I originally created this recipe because I didn’t want to waste ripe bananas, and over time, it evolved into something iconic. The kind of banana bread you make once and then refuse to settle for any other version. And the best part? No weird additives, no refined sugar—just real, wholesome ingredients that actually make you feel good.
Why You’ll Love This Banana Bread
- Almond flour makes it naturally gluten-free, extra moist, and slightly nutty.
- Dates + blueberries + chocolate chips = a heavenly trio of natural sweetness, tartness, and indulgence.
- Olive oil instead of butter keeps it light yet rich.
- No sinking fruit trick (flour-coated blueberries and dates = evenly spread goodness).
- That caramelized banana on top? Chef’s kiss.
Alright, let’s bake.
My Famous Banana Bread Recipe
Ingredients
- 185g almond flour (or swap in all-purpose flour if needed)
- 3 ripe bananas
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla aroma
- Handful of dates, sliced
- Handful of frozen blueberries
- Chocolate chips (measure with your heart)
- Olive oil (just eyeball it)
- Pecan nuts
- Optional but highly recommended: A pinch of cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).
- In one bowl, smash 2 bananas, then mix in the egg, vanilla, and olive oil.
- In another bowl, whisk together the almond flour, baking soda, salt (and cinnamon, if using).
- Combine both bowls, mixing until smooth. Fold in the chocolate chips.
- The magic step: Toss the blueberries and dates in a little all-purpose flour before adding them in. This keeps them from sinking to the bottom.
- Pour the batter into a lined or greased loaf pan. Slice the third banana in half and place it on top for that Instagram-worthy finish.
- Sprinkle some pecan nuts on top.
- Bake for 60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let it cool (if you have the patience). Then slice, eat, and try not to finish it all in one sitting.
Final Thoughts
This banana bread is everything. It’s cozy, delicious, and naturally sweetened—perfect for breakfast, snack time, or when you just need something that feels like a hug in food form.
