For the past several months, I’ve been dealing with something I never expected to experience—meridian pain. At first, it was confusing, unsettling, and frankly, a bit terrifying. The pain started in my arms, and it wasn’t just a small discomfort—it was deep, achy, and spread across my whole arm. My initial reaction was that something was wrong with my heart, but after some self-reflection and guidance, I realized it had everything to do with energy blockages and healing.
The Role of Anxiety in Triggering Meridian Pain
Looking back, I can now see that the onset of this pain coincided with a period when my anxiety was through the roof. My nervous system was in a constant state of fight-or-flight, which of course had a direct impact on my energy channels. At the time, I was experiencing extreme emotional turbulence, and my body was carrying the weight of that stress. The result was a nervous system in flames, which made it much harder for my energy to flow freely.
This intense emotional state, paired with the anxiety-induced inflammation, likely set the stage for the meridian pain to manifest. As my energy channels became blocked or constricted, the pain intensified, and it became a reminder of how closely connected our emotional states are to our physical bodies.
What Are Meridians, and Why Do They Hurt?
Meridians are channels of energy that run through the body, connecting the physical and energetic aspects of our being. In traditional Chinese medicine, the theory is that when energy (or Qi) gets blocked in these meridians, it can manifest as pain, discomfort, or other symptoms. When I started having these flare-ups, I had no idea what was going on.
The pain started out as a widespread ache, which made me think there was something seriously wrong. But as I began to dive into my own healing practices, I started noticing that it was not just random pain—it was connected to my deep healing process, especially as I’ve been working on the physical and emotional layers of my Epstein-Barr virus and becoming more connected with my authentic self. In other words, growing pains.
From Ache to Tingle: Shifting the Energy
Over the months, the nature of the pain has shifted. What once was a deep, achy feeling has now become sharp and tingly, almost as if the energy in my meridians is waking up and moving again. It’s no longer widespread—it’s localized to specific spots along my arms and chest, which feels like a sign that energy blockages are starting to clear.
What has been fascinating to observe is how these shifts seem to correlate with moments of intense healing or emotional release—especially when I’ve done deep meditations or self-work. The more I heal, the more my body reacts as it integrates those changes. But this isn’t just physical—it’s energetic too.
The Role of Shiatsu and Long-Term Healing
I’ve been receiving Shiatsu treatments for over 10 years, and I’ve always found them to be incredibly beneficial for maintaining balance and flow in my body. However, it’s only in recent months that I’ve started experiencing this flare-up of meridian pain, which aligns with a period of deep transformation. This intense healing phase, which has been focused on letting go of old patterns and stepping into my authentic self, seems to have triggered a deeper level of energy movement within my body.
As I work through my own healing with the Epstein-Barr virus, I realize how interconnected everything is. My physical health, emotional state, and energetic well-being are all evolving in tandem, causing these energy surges and uncomfortable sensations. It’s like my body is doing energetic spring cleaning, and it’s not always a smooth process.
The Weather, the Brain, and the Body’s Response
I’ve also noticed that these flare-ups are often worse during certain weather conditions, like high humidity or stormy days. The weather has a direct impact on the body, especially for those of us who are sensitive to energy shifts. Combine that with the fact that I’m currently adjusting to wearing glasses, and my nervous system is recalibrating to this new visual input, and it’s a lot for my body to handle all at once.
It’s been an intense period of adjustment, but I believe all of this is tied to growth and transformation. The more I learn to stay grounded, practice my breathing, and focus on self-care, the less intense these sensations become.
The Power of Understanding and Patience
In this process, I’ve learned that patience and self-awareness are crucial. These sensations—though at times scary and uncomfortable—are part of my journey. They signify that I am healing on a deep level, working through layers of energy that I may have held onto for years. It’s not always easy, but it’s necessary. The discomfort is temporary, and as I continue to release and realign, I am reminded that healing is not linear—it’s messy, unpredictable, and beautiful.
A Message of Hope for Others
If you’re experiencing something similar, I want to reassure you that you’re not alone. Understanding what’s happening in our bodies and energy systems can help us feel more empowered during times of discomfort and uncertainty. And remember, it’s okay to ask for help and lean on supportive treatments, whether it’s Shiatsu, energy healing, or other methods that resonate with you.
Healing is a journey—sometimes it’s intense, but ultimately, it’s about coming home to yourself.
