I Didn’t Choose America—It Chose Me
My passport might be Dutch, but my soul got the stamp “Property of the USA” long before I was born.
From a young age, I felt drawn to the United States in a way I couldn’t explain. It starts with my name—Tanimara—which is Native American. My parents found it in a ‘70s western called Chisum. Even back then, the story was writing itself.
When I watched American TV as a child, I didn’t just see another culture. I saw a world that made more sense to me than my own. The way people moved, the way houses looked, even the way they interacted—it all felt like I was peeking into a life I was supposed to be living. I never quite understood why Europe felt off to me—until I realized, my soul was wired to a different blueprint.
Whenever I meet Americans, something lights up. Not in a fangirl kind of way—this isn’t about obsession or admiration. It’s deeper. It’s recognition. As if my soul leans in and softly says, “Oh, there you are.” It’s not fascination—it’s familiarity. A remembering.
Sure, I love everything people usually associate with the U.S.—the shopping, the food, the road trips, the endless places to explore. But for me, it’s always been something deeper. My American friends have even joked I’m more patriotic than they are. But the truth is: this isn’t about patriotism.
It’s about frequency.
The First Whisper
My first trip to the U.S. was to Los Angeles, and something happened during that flight. There was this strange magnetic pull to the earth. I looked out of the window and there it was—that rugged orange landscape that had obsessed me since childhood.
That’s when the Captain announced: “We’re flying over the Grand Canyon.”
Later in life, someone pointed out that my photography always leans toward warm orange tones. That iconic desert palette against the wide blue sky—my eyes had always known.
And when I finally set foot on American soil, I heard it loud and clear, in the quietest way: “Welcome home.”
The Hills, the Glam, and the Girl Behind the Brush
I’ve always been enchanted by Hollywood glam. Watching The Hills, I fell in love with Lauren Conrad’s signature waves—the effortless, beachy perfection. I decided then and there: That’s going to be my signature hairdo too. So I looked up how to recreate it, and yes, I now own the iconic Hot Tools curling iron because that’s just beauty industry gospel.
During that beauty deep dive, I stumbled upon a makeup tutorial for The Hills-inspired glam—this one by Kandee Johnson—and I was instantly hooked. Her vibrant energy and artistry captivated me.
That spark? It lit a whole new path.
I eventually became a makeup artist myself—and yes, I flew to L.A. to meet Kandee.
Because when something calls your soul, you answer.
Manifesting My Pantry Life—One Mason Jar at a Time
Even in the small kitchen of my Dutch apartment, I’ve carved out a tiny piece of my American dream: a drawer I lovingly call The Breakfast Drawer. It’s filled with mason jars—oats, seeds, protein powder, spices—everything I need for my daily rituals like banana bread, pancakes, or a nourishing breakfast bowl.
It might not be a walk-in pantry (yet), but to me, it feels like one.
This drawer is my daily manifestation—my way of inviting that cozy, abundant, farmhouse-style American pantry life into my present. A little taste of the big dream. A wink to the universe.
The Brand That Travels With Me
I’m a traveler by heart, and when I travel, I do it in style—with Tumi. It’s not just luggage; it’s a lifestyle. Wallets, phone cases, suitcases—it’s all Tumi.
And yes, I used to sell it at the airport—and let me tell you, it flew out the door als warme broodjes (like hotcakes).
My 30th Was Baked in Red, White & Soul
When I turned 30, my best friend made me the most me cake ever—draped in stars and stripes and crowned with my name. Not because I asked for it. But because everyone close to me already knew: I didn’t choose America—America chose me. This cake wasn’t just dessert. It was a cosmic wink. A sugar-frosted nod to my soul’s favorite flag. A prelude to the chapter I’m now writing. One layer at a time.
