Let me just say it straight: I never thought a pair of glasses would become such a big plot twist in my healing journey. But here we are. And this isn’t just about a prescription or a pair of lenses — this is about the delicate dance between my nervous system, my energy, and the way my body processes the world post-viral.
When Seeing Clearly Isn’t So Clear
So, I had my long-awaited follow-up with the eye doctor. And yes, she confirmed that my new glasses were made correctly. Technically, on paper, everything checks out.
But here’s the plot twist:
My body is too tired to adjust to them.
And the act of adjusting is making me more tired.
It’s like a loop with no off-ramp. I show up with the hope that “new glasses = more clarity = energy boost,” but instead I’m greeted with a different truth:
My nervous system isn’t ready yet.
Welcome to the post-viral paradox.
This isn’t your average “oops I forgot my glasses” moment — it’s a full-on neurological negotiation.
So here’s where things get even more layered.
After my eye doctor told me I was just too tired to adjust to the new glasses properly, I started noticing patterns. Like how my brain absolutely hates scrolling. Not just “ugh, this is annoying” hate—more like “this is setting off my entire nervous system” hate. It’s a direct signal from my body that I’m not ready yet.
When I do work behind a screen, I’ve learned to be super intentional. I wear my screen glasses, and I set a soft rhythm: every 30 minutes, I pause and do the 20-20-20 rule—look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, and then step away from the screen entirely for a couple of minutes. Sometimes I just breathe. Sometimes I stretch my neck or touch a plant. It may sound small, but it makes a huge difference when your nervous system is already living on edge.
And yes—reading glasses joined the team too. Because sometimes the only thing that truly helps is using the right tool for this exact moment in the healing curve.
How They Measure — and What That Doesn’t Measure
One of the more surprising realizations from the appointment was this:
The way prescriptions are created doesn’t necessarily account for how sensitive or depleted someone’s nervous system is. The doctor explained they just check if you can read the letters — not if the image feels good to your brain or sits well in your body.
So yes, technically I can read the letters on the chart. But can I wear the glasses without getting wired, dizzy, or overwhelmed? That’s another story. That’s my story.
Two Forces Pulling Me Apart
What makes this so complex — and frustrating at times — is this:
- I need glasses to see better and reduce strain.
- But wearing them activates my nervous system so much, I can’t seem to find the rest I’m craving.
So what am I left with?
Glasses that are correct on paper but don’t yet fit the energetic state of my body.
A nervous system that’s healing, slowly, but still too fragile to take on the full responsibility of change.
The result?
Every step — putting them on, trying to work, adjusting to screen time — becomes monumental.
Letting Go of “Forcing It”
One thing the doctor said that stayed with me was this:
“You don’t have to wear them constantly — just when needed.”
That, surprisingly, gave me a moment of peace.
Because part of me was still trying to “push through” like I used to. To follow the logical steps: get prescription → wear glasses → feel better.
But now I realize: this is not linear.
This is not logic.
This is healing.
And healing has its own timeline.
What I’m Doing Instead
I’m now listening to my inner signals. I wear the glasses when it feels manageable. I give myself breaks. I still do child’s pose and the physiological sigh after screen time. I recalibrate.
Because the truth is, I’m not just adjusting to new glasses —
I’m adjusting to a new nervous system,
a new way of seeing,
and a new relationship with my energy.
And that deserves patience. Gentleness. And the understanding that just because I can read the letters on a screen, doesn’t mean I’m ready to read the world the same way again — not yet.
