Why Your Routine Might Be Holding You Back – And What to Do Instead

For years, we’ve been told that consistency is key, that successful people rise with the sun and conquer their to-do list before breakfast. Morning routines are practically a religion. And sure—structure can be powerful. But what if I told you that sticking to a rigid routine might actually be working against you?

As an Indigo soul, I’ve always struggled with fitting into the standard mold. I tried the whole “perfect morning routine” thing—the same set of steps every day, strict consistency, and the pressure to get it right. But instead of feeling grounded, I often felt trapped. If I missed a step, I felt like I was failing. If I wasn’t “consistent enough,” I felt like I wasn’t making progress. And honestly? It became stressful rather than supportive.

Add to that the reality of living post-viral, where my energy levels shift on a daily basis. Some days I wake up and I’m ready to go; other days, my body is clearly whispering, “Nope, today is for rest.” And here’s the thing: trying to force a rigid routine on a body that’s asking for fluidity is like trying to pour sunlight into a Tupperware. It just doesn’t fit.

Then it hit me: what if routine isn’t about structure, but about alignment? What if instead of following a set-in-stone formula, we gave ourselves permission to flow—to tune in and ask, “What do I need today?” What if the new routine was built on self-trust, intuition, and the kind of flexibility that honors our ever-changing energetic needs?

For me, real consistency means consistently honoring my truth, my body, and my energy—not blindly repeating the same routine just because someone on Instagram told me to.

The Shift: From Routine to “Wins”

Instead of a set-in-stone routine, I’m now experimenting with a daily wins approach—a more intuitive way of checking in with myself that allows for flow, freedom, and flexibility. It’s not about doing the same things every day, but about making sure that, by the end of the day, I’ve nurtured the key areas of my life.

Here’s the new approach I’m embracing:

1. A Physical Win

Movement that feels good—whether it’s a dancing workout, a walk in nature, or some stretching. No pressure to do the same thing every day, just a moment of body connection.

2. An Emotional Win

Something that helps me process or honor my emotions. Maybe that’s journaling, talking to a friend, or simply letting myself feel without judgment.

3. A Mental Win

Feeding my mind with something that excites me—a book, a podcast, or deep thinking about a topic I love. Not forcing knowledge, but curiosity-driven learning.

4. An Energetic Win

Connecting with my energy body—whether through meditation, breathwork, grounding, or simply checking in with how I feel.

5. A Soulful Win

Something that makes me feel alive and in tune with my soul. That could be creative expression, time in nature, or a spiritual practice.

6. A Nourishing Win

Feeding my body and my soul. This could be a well-balanced meal, hydration, or even a moment of true self-care that replenishes me.

Why This Works Better

  1. It’s adaptable – No guilt if I miss something one day; I can balance things out over time.
  2. It removes perfectionism – Instead of checking off a list, I focus on how I feel.
  3. It aligns with my energy – Some days I need more emotional care, some days I crave more movement. It’s about meeting myself where I am.
  4. It keeps life interesting – No more repetitive, uninspired routines. Every day can be different, as long as I get my “wins” in.

The Takeaway: Create a Routine That Works With You, Not Against You

If you’ve ever felt trapped by routine or struggled with consistency, maybe you don’t need more discipline—maybe you need a new approach.

Try asking yourself:

  • What does my body/mind/soul need today?
  • What “wins” would make me feel fulfilled at the end of the day?
  • Am I creating a structure that supports me—or one that limits me?

Routines can be great—but only when they serve you. And if they don’t? It’s time to let go of the rulebook and create a daily flow that truly fits you.
